The MSWAC League Music Festival is an adjudicated event that offers student’s opportunities to strive for their highest levels of music making, increase their musical literacy, interpret and evaluate music, and make connections between music and other disciplines. All logistics and protocols for this festival have been based on KSHSAA rules and guidelines for hosting a festival.
 
The festival is meant to provide learning opportunities and assessments that serve to extend and enrich music education offered in schools throughout the state in the southwest region of Kansas.

  1. ​All students entered and participating in the festival must be academically eligible and not be on their district’s academic ineligibility report as of the performance date.
  2. A music director MUST be present with any student(s) attending the festival”
  3. The festival is open to schools within the MSWAC League and surrounding areas.
    1. Any middle school student currently enrolled in a music ensemble at their school, grade levels seventh through eighth, is considered to be eligible.

  1. ​​Register online at http://www.dcmscardinals.net/music-festival.html. 
  2. Print the entry form; submit it and your payment by January 31, 2017. Make all festival registration fees payable to: Dodge City Middle School.
  3. Acceptable forms of payment are:
    1. School account checks with proper school identification imprinted.
    2. Bank or US Mail money orders for exact amount of fees.
    3. Money orders from school or parent booster organization.
  4. Submitting Solo and Small Ensemble Students: 
    1.     Visit : 
    2.     A FORM MUST BE SUBMITTED FOR EVERY SOLOIST AND EVERY SMALL ENSEMBLE.
    3.     You will have access to your responses within 24 hours of submission to check for accuracy 
  5. Delivery of registration forms and fees:
    1. Please allow five (5) business days for delivery of registration confirmation and fees if sent by USPS.
    2. Hand delivery is also acceptable if delivered to Dodge City Middle School, 2000 6th Ave, Dodge City, Kansas 67801, Attn: Deb Keitel.
    3. Entries submitted after January 31st, 2017 will be assessed a 25% late fee
    4. No entries accepted after Wednesday February 8th, 2017
  6. Substitution and changes (i.e.: program, personnel changes including accompanists, students, teacher names, etc) should be sent to Hollyann Sewell (sewell.hollyann@usd443.org) at least two weeks prior to the festival date. We will do our best, but cannot guarantee all changes will be honored. 
  7. Room assignments and time schedules will be sent to music directors of each participating school three (3) weeks prior to the festival date.
  8. h. Music directors are required to inform each participant, group, and accompanist of their performance schedule and room assignments.

  1. ​​Performances fall under three main categories.
    1. Soloist (one performer alone or with an accompanist)
    2. Small Ensemble (three to fifteen performers)
    3. Large Ensemble
  2. Solo and small ensemble music is to be selected by the performer with their music director’s guidance. The music director must select all large ensemble literature. Large ensembles are required to perform two contrasting works.
  3. Music selections should be of high-quality literature with educational value. 
    1. Music must be appropriate for performance. 
    2. In alignment with KSHSAA guidelines, students performing music from stage productions or popular music will receive comments only.
    3. Music should be selected to enhance student’s awareness and appreciation of various cultures, styles, and historical periods.

  1. Qualified adjudicators will provide written and verbal critique for each performance. 
  2. The decision of the adjudicator is final. 
  3. A director may choose to participate for “comments only”. Please note “comments only” when submitting large ensembles and solo/small ensemble entries.  If the director chooses the comments only option, the performer/ensemble will receive a certificate for “Performance Recognition” only.
  4. Adjudicators will use rubrics adapted from the KSHSAA webpage for critiquing student performance. The rubric is adapted with middle school performance levels in mind; with greater weight given to rhythmic and note accuracy.

Room Assignment
  1. Room assignments and time schedules will be sent to music directors of each participating school three (3) weeks prior to the festival date.
  2. Music directors are required to inform each participant, group, and accompanists of their performance schedule and room assignments.
  3. 3. All students should be dropped off at the front entrance of DCMS in the circle drive. Busses must then park at the Civic Center just east of DCMS.
