OPEN HOUSE & BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHTS
You are cordially invited to attend Dodge City Middle School Open House. This special open house invitation is to all sixth, seventh and eighth grade students and their parents. The sixth grade Back to School Night is scheduled for Tuesday, August 20th and the seventh and eighth grade is scheduled for Monday, August 19th. All Back to School Nights for sixth seventh and eighth grade will be held at Dodge City Middle School from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. The purpose of this back to school night is to provide an opportunity for students to review their schedules, find their classrooms, meet with their teachers, check their locks and locker locations. Sixth grade parents are invited to attend team meeting and tour the school.
Spirit Shirts will be on sale for $10.00 during enrollment and on Back to School Nights. A limited quantity of the 2013 – 2014 Spirit Shirts will be available on Thursday, August 1st. Every Thursday is a Spirit Day at DCMS. On spirit day, students can wear a spirit shirt of their choice as long as it has a Cardinal logo. We encourage all DCMS students to show their pride by wearing their spirit shirts every Thursday. Our first spirit day will be on Thursday, August 22nd and we would like to see 100% of our students showing DCMS pride by wearing a Spirit Shirt of their choice. P.E. shirts are not considered a spirit shirt.
LANYARDS AVAILABLE DURING ENROLLMENT
Dodge City Middle School Student Council has purchased lanyards to sell to the students for the 2013-2014 school year. The lanyards are red with the school mascot, the Cardinal, and the letters “DCMS Cardinal” printed in white.
This past school year, students were issued student IDs by the school district. Students were required to carry their IDs and had to present them for various school functions. The decision to purchase lanyards was made because students frequently lost their IDs and they couldn't be easily replaced. It's believed these attractive accessories will contribute to positive school spirit, eliminate the problems created by lost IDs and offer a place for students to display their DCMS Awards they receive throughout their middle school career.
Lanyards will be available during enrollment and throughout the school year for a cost of $2.00 each.
ENROLLMENT THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 2013
Enrollment is scheduled to be held at Dodge City Middle School, 2000 6th Avenue on Thursday, August 1st from 7:00 a.m.—7:00 p.m. PTO will be at enrollment so parents may sign up for various committees. Please help—PTO is in need of parents to volunteer. This organization does so much for our students. Parents who have a smartphone or a mobile device are encouraged to bring them to enrollment. We will have a HELP desk setup for enrolling in Skyward Family Access and Remind 101.
Students who have participated in the summer reading program will need to bring their summer reading logs to enrollment. We will be handing out invitations during enrollment for the reading reception award nights for all students who have read 50 minutes or more a week. All reading logs must have parent signatures to qualify for a summer reading award.
REMIND 101 PARENT NOTIFICATIONS
During enrollment we will be asking parents and students to sign up for Remind 101. This year, we are encouraging all parents to sign up for Remind 101. Remind 101 provides a safe, easy way for teachers and the school to communicate with students and parents using the latest technology. This year our goal is to keep our parents informed of all school events and activities. Many times, parents need important information about what school events are available for parents to attend. Parents need to be informed and one way to keep in touch with our parents is through the use of technology and cell phones. To enroll in DCMS Remind 101 parent notifications, follow the directions below using your cell phone or e-mail address.
SUMMER READING AWARD RECEPTION
In addition to this year’s back to school night, DCMS will be hosting a special reading reception for our top summer readers. Any student in grades six, seven or eight who has read 50 minutes a week or more and has a signed parent/guardian reading log will be eligible to attend the reading reception.
SKYWARD FAMILY ACCESS
During enrollment, DCMS will provide a help desk for any parent who would like to enroll in the Family Access student reporting system. We will provide support for both online enrollment and apps for mobile devices such as cell phones or tablets.
Family Access by Skyward is a free service designed for families who would like to easily track your student(s) academic progress while at school. The service allows parents or guardians to view your student’s attendance, grades, schedule, food service balance, progress, assignments and emergency information.
Using Family Access does require an application form with the appropriate information to validate parent and/or guardian that would like to have a login and password assigned to them. Parents and/or guardians of the same student(s) can share the same login and password if that would be easier for them. We also want to remind everyone that this is a free service and you do not have to worry about sending any money at any time.
Individual School Pictures
LIFETOUCH will be taking individual school pictures on Wednesday, August 28th. Anyone that is not satisfied with his/her school pictures may return the entire assortment to the school within three school days, and a refund will be made by check. A retake day is scheduled for October 19th. Everyone will be photographed, but only those paying will receive pictures. Picture day will be a non-uniform day. Students will be asked to follow the non-uniform dress code. This will be the picture used for the yearbook! Remember that payment is required at the time pictures are taken. Please make checks payable to LIFETOUCH.

IPADS FOR STUDENTS AND DIGITAL PARENT NIGHTS
In January of 2013, all students at DCMS will be issued an iPad for classroom use. To qualify for an iPad parents and students must attend one of the parent night training sessions that will be held in October and November. The purpose of these parent nights is to:
During the Digital Parent Nights students and parents will be asked to sign a user agreement ensuring that each student and parent understands the responsibilities associated with having and operating a mobile device on campus. Critical to the effective participation in using a mobile device like an iPad are the digital citizenship skills that are associated with enabling students to protect their reputations, develop their voice, and develop into safe and savvy Internet users. That is why every parent should make an effort to attend one of the three scheduled Digital Parent Nights.
Students will not be issued a mobile device unless they have attended one training session and the User Agreement has been signed by both the parent and students. Parents who have more than one student attending Dodge City Middle school may choose one night that best fits their schedule. The digital parent nights have been scheduled for the following dates and times.
